Not many family businesses can boast passing their century, but Madame Foner has done exactly that.
We have survived industrial changes , two world wars and dramatic changes to womens status - all reflected in their underwear.
The original Madame Foner opened her shop in 1901, she was just 17, a shy girl with lots of courage. In those days it was ver unusual for a woman, especially one so young, to run a business. But with the help and encouragement of her local bank manager and a supportive family she worked 24/7 at her machine.
The shop sold "stays" which cinched the waist, laced up at the back and gave women the then fashionable hourglass victorian figure. Originally the shop sold grey "stays" with whalebone support for 1s/11d, 2s/11d & 3s/11d, made-to-measure started at 10s/6d going up to a guinea for hand-embroidered white satin for wedding orders. A guinea would be the equivalent now of the pound you put in the parking meter for a few hours but then it was a very good weeks pay. |

After the end of the first world war there was a huge change in the lingerie industry. The grey "stays" were discarded , women were released from their stiff corsets and demanded lightweight, pretty garments to wear underneath.
When the first " uplift " bra was put in the swansea shop window in 1920 it caused a local scandal !
Crowds had to be moved on by police - it was the first undergarment to show the shape of a bosom that people had seen - the " Bust-Bodice " before then had been a flattening piece of material buttoned down the front. This new silk item was truly a shocker for the day and Foner's were told to remove it from public view. |

What a change to today . The windows now are full of simply scrumptious bridal corsets & underwear and when the police visit they come to buy.
Foner's are always looking for the newest ideas to enhance the feminine shape, still with the emphasis on good fitting, good service and good looks.
